About Our Club |
HISTORY SPBC Toastmasters was started in 2004 at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia with the blessings of Pastor Lance Watson. SPBC Toastmasters was organized in February 2004 and chartered officially on June 2, 2004. Charter members who are still active members of SPBC Toastmasters include Alfreda Page Garner, Paula Ellis Adams and Virgie Binford. The sponsors were Dr. Binford and Pat Jordan who were already Toastmasters with other clubs and were also Distinguished Toastmasters, the highest award that a member can achieve in Toastmasters. Pat had been a member of many other clubs but the level of excellence that she sought was not there. She therefore started the group with the mindset that a Toastmasters club should have a theme of excellence as a goal. Pat wanted a club that grew its members in their speaking abilities, in their leadership abilities and, most importantly, a club to understand and accept needed improvement in those areas … thus the birth and growth of SPBC Toastmasters. June 2012 will mark the 8th year anniversary for SPBC Toastmasters.
GOALS The goal of SPBC Toastmasters is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
SPBC Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation. Whether you are a student, a professional, employed or unemployed, SPBC Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. By learning to effectively formulate and express your ideas, you open an entirely new world of possibilities. You’ll be more persuasive and confident when giving presentations and you’ll improve your one-on-one dealings with others.
The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. And you’ll love the applause! Constructive evaluation is the heart of the Toastmasters program. Each time you give a prepared speech; an evaluator will point out strengths and suggest improvements. At first you’ll be applauded for your effort; later you’ll be applauded for your skill. Each SPBC Toastmasters meeting also allows you the opportunity to meet, great and fellowship with members and guests while enjoying a delicious meal before each meeting provided by a SPBC Toastmaster member who serves in the role of Food Host for the evening. |

The Toastmasters Mission A statement of shared values
Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:
We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.
