The Toastmasters Mission
A statement of shared values

Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.

Mission and Vision

The Toastmasters Club Mission

The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

The Mission of Toastmasters International

Toastmasters International is the leading movement devoted to making effective oral communication a worldwide reality.

Through its member Clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking - vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind.

It is basic to this mission that Toastmasters International continually expand its worldwide network of member clubs, thereby offering ever-greater numbers of people the opportunity to benefit from its program.

The Vision of Toastmasters

Toastmasters International empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. Through our member Clubs, people throughout the world can improve their communication and leadership skills, and find the courage to change.

Toastmasters International Values

Toastmasters International's Core Values are integrity, dedication to excellence, service to the member, and respect for the individual. These are values worthy of a great organisation, and we believe we should incorporate them as anchor points in every decision we make. Our core values provide us with a means of not only guiding but also evaluating our operations, our planning, and our vision for the future.

TRANSITION TEASERS TO GET THE POINTS ACROSS.  (note, transition teasers really are what catch phrase/statement you put into the introduction to put people on the edges of their seats to listen to what’s next or the answer(s) to you teasers).  These “teasers” are the glue that holds your speech together.

                Examples:

Introduction section: Grab em with a teaser!

  1.  “You would not believe…..”
  2. Start a story, then say “can you guess what happened/what happens next?
  3. “Silver spoon” How would you like”, or “would you like” to
    1. Make more money
    2. Have great relationships with you kids/spouse/friends!
    3. Have the most awesome style that leaves an impression!
    4. Learn how to deal with obstacles/barriers in the way of what you want?
    5. Etc, etc.
  4. “Verbal knife”
    1. Are you broke? We’re going to talk about ways to get you out of the hole of debt---
    2. Do you know if you’ll make it financially through retirement—we’ll give you 3 tips on how to prepare financially for retirement.
    3. Have you ever lost something near and dear to you?  We’ll talk about 3 ways to deal with it—your internal reactions and actions you can take.

Body:

  1. With each point (2-3 points) you will introduce a new teaser as you begin telling about the first point—maybe the least important first.  Example based on 3a and 4a above
    1. So you have no money in your account at the end of the month?  Evaluate your budget—what is really critical, what is not? What put you into that hole?
    2. You may have thought there was nothing you could eliminate from your budget? Bet there’s something—how about that extra cup of coffee at Starbucks? That meal out? Set a limit this way….(start building a ladder to get out of the hole)
    3. So you’ve done a and b above and still not enough?  Anything you can sell (garage sale, Craig’s list, E-bay)?  Any services you can make time to offer like dog-walking?, pet watching? Ask for a raise?

Conclusion:

  1. Be sure to summarize all points and the main introductory point—“tightening budget, giving up frills temporarily and find new income sources are all ways to dig yourself out of that debt hole and climb out.”
