How to give an effective humourous speech (19th Aug 2013)

On 19th August, our regular toastmasters meeting turned very special. There were many highlights on that day – some were expected and some unexpected.

The unexpected highlights were the first two speakers Marco Lok and Lester Cheng who delivered their project 1 speech. The unexpected bit was that both of them spoke so well that it seemed like they were delivering their Project 6 speech. They added elements of surprize, humour and drama in their speech and kept the audience hooked.

The third speaker Gladys gave delivered a project 3 speech and Andrew Yeung captivated the audience yet again with his speech on ‘Subconscious Mind’.

The expected element and the highlight of the evening was our guest speaker Michael Dorsher who is a stand up comedian and the co-founder of Comedy.HK. He spoke on the topic ‘How to give an effective humourous speech’. He gave some very good tips. He told the audience that as opposed to stand- up comedy where the speaker dons a mask and becomes someone else on stage, in a humourous speech, the speaker is still himself. He does not really change persona, hence the speaker should only say or do things that he/she believes in and is comfortable saying and doing it. He has to reflect himself and not be somebody else, otherwise he may not be able to convince the audience of his point.

Michael then said that the speaker should focus on the message of the speech first and then add humour to his message instead of doing it the other way round. This will ensure a good quality of speech.

Michael’s tips were very useful. The contestants of the humourous speech contest are now very well equipped to give their speech. Apart from the rules, regulations and guidelines for humourous speech, they also have tips on delivering a good speech.

Our club members are now eagerly waiting for the humourous speech contest on 2nd September.
