About Our Club

Communication works for those willing to work at it.

Determination, commitment and an unrelenting pursuit of your goals leads to success. Textron India Toastmasters club is a synergetic and a hard-working club who preaches this message. Charted more than four years ago, this club has promptly kept up it’s weekly practice and helped its members achieve their communication and leadership goals. After a hattrick year of getting the President’s distinguished award, the club now aims to go to the next level and attain a higher form of glory.

In order to take the stairs to the next level you must start at the bottom. Such was the beginning that Ralph C Smedley initiated back in 1924, where a group met in the basement of Santa Ana, California and formed the first toastmasters club. Despite the humble beginning, the vision was enormous. This seed sown is now a huge blossoming tree and we often celebrate being part this vast network of over 16,000 clubs in 143 countries.

Like the clubs all over the world, our club also aims at slaying the same inner demon – the fear of public speaking. If this demon exercises its powers over you, you’re not alone! It’s the number one fear among the people and some even say it to be more powerful than the fear of dying. As Jerry Seinfeld says, "That means that the average person at a funeral would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy." It’s a scary thought and recognizing this need to overcome this overwhelming fear, the toastmasters community brings the solution.

There are many learnings one can find in nature. One such lessons can be drawn from rainbows. The magic, grandeur and awe that they exhibit all originating from a small droplet in the sky. But this occurrence is not something we see every time there is a rain storm. Only when the sunlight is focussed on the raindrop at a specific angle it transforms into a beautiful rainbow. Toastmasters International offers one such focussed approach to transform individuals into better communicators. It serves as a prism, shaping and revealing the true colours one possesses.

This transformation is no small one and it’s bought about by a relaxed, supportive and friendly atmosphere in the club meetings. Week after week we are given a new opportunity to try the prism experiment, to explore and hone our communication skills. Our mantra is to – Experiment, fail and try again, “To Refract, Reflect and finally emerge like a Rainbow”. The toastmasters meeting structure fits in to serve this purpose.

The first is the prepared speech segment, the immediate benefit of taking part in this segment is self-discovery. Toastmasters urges you to become the best version of yourself, each speech allows the members to advance in their ability and confidence as they progress through the manuals. The next segment is the Table topics or the impromptu speaking session. More often than not we are required to speak without preparation, this segment is aimed building your ability to think on your feet, organize our thoughts and express ourselves in a clear and concise manner. This is followed with the evaluation segment, serving to provide the members constructive feedback and encouragement. This organized structure and professionalism exhibited enhances the overall experience.

It’s also important to know that nobody becomes a public speaker or a leader by watching others, you become one by speaking and leading. An assured way to fail is to never try. Don’t give in to that fear of failure, it will definitely immobilize you to act and hinder you from achieving what you are capable of. We are all unique in the way we interpret life; how we interact with others and in every decision we make. Toastmasters is one place where you can treasure this uniqueness and advance at your own pace in the program.

We all join the club to become better communicators, but I realized were becoming better leaders too. From taking small leadership responsibilities like the club meeting roles, to be the secretary, Vice President-Education and now President of the club, I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to go through these roles and learn so much. This club has nurtured many more like me before and will continue to do so. I am determined to carry forward the legacy!

I believe there is no end to the possibilities and personal growth you can have in toastmasters. What you derive out of toastmasters is directly dependent on your commitment and willingness to learn. Put in the right efforts and strike your fear at right angle to emerge like a rainbow, destined for admiration and success.

A message to all reading this piece – “If you are persistent you will get it, if you are consistent you will keep it.” Be a toastmaster and polish your skills to become better and better and better….

Join us in our weekly practice. Guests are most welcome!

Regards,

Vaibhav Gupta
