pleonasm (noun) PLEE-a-nazm

Redundancy in speech or writing, the use of more words than is necessary or an example of such use.

Pleonasm - Kick it with one of your feet.

D.A. Cruse, Lexical Semantics. Amazon

'Indirect crook'd' is forceful in Shakespeare; a mere pleonasm in Massinger.

T.E.Eliot, The Sacred Wood. Amazon

We were near neighbors, as the pleonasm has it, both when I lived on Berkeley Street and after I had built my own house on Concord Avenue; and I suppose he found my youthful informality convenient.

William Dean Howells, The White Mr Longfellow. Amazon

Indeed, the contrast of the length of contemporary time (this pleonasm is inevitable) is no small mystery, and the world has never had the wit fully to confess it.

Alice Meynell, The Children. Amazon

Most one can merely guess at. Parataxis? A new form of military transport. Pleonasm? A heresy prevalent in Greece in the 4th and 5th centuries BC. Aporia? A small town in upstate Michigan, used by market researchers to test out new lines ("let's see how it plays in Aporia"). Zeugma? A dogma stubbornly adhered to by believers in Zeus. Scesis onomaton? Haven't a clue. Dirimens copulatio? We won't go into that, if you don't mind. Synecdoche, though, is easy. It's a newly discovered opera by Handel, staged in London last week with a cast all dressed as reindeer, to mixed reviews.

David McKie, Guardian, 7 April 2005. Guardian
