How Toastmasters Helped Me |
For several years, I have volunteered to teach the Be A Success segment of the Junior Achievement's (JA's) Your Economic Success (YES!) Program. I had to do seven 45 minute sessions (which included a 25-minute game the students did on their own). It was a unique experience, in that I had seven chances to present the information and, then, I could self-evaluate after each session regarding what went well, what didn't; what material I seemed to have a good handle on, or that I felt I could have presented more clearly, and what I needed to do to address that.
Getting to 'practice' a presentation seven times to get the timing down and to really get a grasp on what I was presenting was a really neat opportunity. Unfortunately, my fee was a little less than the Clintons get and in the form of a YES! WATER bottle!
I do know that without Toastmasters, I don't think I would have had the confidence to volunteer for JA's financial literacy program which I think is so important for middle and high school students to be exposed to before the start having to make decisions about college and careers. To be able to give back in this way is one of my biggest motivations for belonging to Toastmasters now that I am retired.

The Toastmasters Mission A statement of shared values
Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:
We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.
