About Our Club

Colorado Orators League

We are excited to have our Toastmasters meetings at 7:00 am every Thursday morning.  For all you earlybirds who like to get theirday going early, our club is for you.  We are a very diverse membership with different speaking backgrounds, but we share the common element of loving to help members find their voice so they can be better leaders at work, home, and in other organizations they belong to.

Through the Toastmasters system, many people have found their voice and love to speak in public, allowing them to follow their passion and fullfill their desires.

Educational Process
Communication and leadership developmentCC manual

The educational program is the heart of every Toastmasters club. It provides members with a proven curriculum that develops communication and leadership skills one step at a time, with many opportunities for awards and recognition along the way. The communication and leadership tracks are not mutually exclusive; you may participate in both at the same time, if you wish.

  • You progress along each track by working through a series of manuals, each of which offers a set of carefully crafted projects to complete.
  • Each project includes an evaluation guide, which gives club members an easy way to provide immediate feedback as the project is completed.
  • Once you become a member, you can begin the educational program right away.

Please refer to the following manuals to get you started in both tracks:

Leadership

Learn to lead with practical practice
Members working in the leadership track learn and practice leadership skills by serving in club roles.

The Competent Leadership manual is the core of the leadership track. It features 10 projects, which you complete while serving in various club meeting roles. An evaluator will give you feedback on each project, helping you to improve. When you complete the manual, you are eligible for Competent Leader (CL) recognition. Complete the CL application in the manual and ask your vice president education (VPE) to submit it online to World Headquarters. You'll receive a CL certificate and, if you wish, World Headquarters will send your employer a letter about your accomplishment.

Advanced Leader Program
After earning the CL award you can further refine and develop your leadership skills by working in the advanced leader program. Members working in this program are eligible for Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) and Advanced Leader Silver (ALS) recognition.

Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB)

  • To be eligible for this award, a member must have:Achieved new Competent Leader award
  • Achieved Competent Communicator award (or Competent Toastmaster award)
  • Served at least six months as a club officer (president, vice president education, vice president membership, vice president public relations, secretary, treasurer or sergeant at arms) and participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office
  • While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program

Conducted any two presentations from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series

Advanced Leader Silver (ALS)
To be eligible for this award, a member must have:

  • Achieved Advanced Leader Bronze award (or "old" Competent Leader award)
  • Served a complete term as a district leader (district governor, lieutenant governor, public relations officer, secretary, treasurer, division governor or area governor). A complete term is defined as having served at least from September 1 through June 30. Those assuming office after September 1 do not qualify as having served a full term
  • Completed the High Performance Leadership program
  • Served successfully as a club sponsor, mentor or coach

To apply for either of the Advanced Leader awards, complete the appropriate section of the AL/DTM application and ask your vice president education to submit it online to World Headquarters. You'll receive a certificate and, if you wish, World Headquarters will send your employer a letter about your accomplishment.

High Performance Leadership
High Performance Leadership features five projects offering instruction and practice in such vital leadership areas as developing a vision, goal-setting and planning, developing plans and strategies, and team-building. It also gives you feedback on your leadership skills. The program may be completed within your Toastmasters club, area or district, and even within your company or community.

Perhaps you would enjoy taking on a project for your club or district while serving as an officer or committee chairman. Or, if you are an employee or supervisor in a business organization, you could do a leadership project related to the needs of your organization. Other possibilities include projects for your community, church, an association or professional group, or some other organization. Your project can be almost anything, so long as it is legal, ethical, and socially responsible, and your activities are not represented as being endorsed by Toastmasters International.

Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)
The Distinguished Toastmaster award is the highest our organization bestows and it recognizes both communication and leadership skills. To be eligible for the award a member must have:

  • Achieved Advanced Communicator Gold award (or achieved Advanced Toastmaster Gold award)
  • Achieved Advanced Leader Silver award (or achieved Advanced Leader award)

To apply for the Distinguished Toastmaster award, complete the appropriate section of the AL/DTM application and ask your vice president education to submit it online to World Headquarters. You'll receive a plaque and, if you wish, World Headquarters will send a letter to your employer about your achievement.

Take 5 With Patricia Vialpando, President 2017-2018

She’s silly and professional, laid back and driven…she’s Patricia Vialpando, the new president of the Colorado Orators League. Recently, she shared a few thoughts about her history with Toastmasters and her hopes as we move forward.

When did you join Toastmasters and why?  I joined Toastmasters January 2015 and the reason I joined was and is to expand into a higher version of myself in the public eye. A giving knowledge for a gift of speech to see far and speak wide while gifting others with my eloquent knowledge of my expertise of Natural Body Restoration utilizing whole earth.

How did you feel about your communication and leadership skills then? My communication and leadership kills were barely there, I had no confidence or trust in my ability to carry forth such efforts.

How do you feel you have grown in those skills since? I feel I have come such a long way in the past 2 years. As I think back to the first time I went to a toastmaster meeting at Colorado Orator's League I was in awe that these people, the member could get up in front of an audience and orate at such proficiency and accuracy that I wanted to be just like them. Today I am able to stand in front of an audience with total self-confidence and trust. Pushing through fear is never easy but it is so worth it in the end. To me that is one step in the right direction of my future.

As the new president of the Colorado Orators League, what is your greatest hope for the club? My greatest hope is to my vision to facilitate better club enhancement experiences and my club president mission is “To gather all those who are in deep resonance with their personal experiences relating and adhering to the Toastmaster and Club Visions and Missions beautifying their pathway unknown into a valley of peace and forward movement of their speakers’ journey.”

If you could make one big club event or goal come to fruition this next year, what would it be and why? I still have the Texas BBQ sitting near and dear to my heart. This BBQ means a lot to me because it is way where our members can come together in an outside informal setting with their friends and families and other toastmaster of our area clubs to unite in comradeship, food and good toastmaster fun!

Are you ready to become a better communicator and leader?

We would love to have you join us on Thursdays from 7:00 - 8:15am @ The Pikes Peak National Bank at 2401 W. Colorado Ave.

How Does it Work?

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced programme allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

  • A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.
  • Members learn communication skills by working through manuals such as the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. There are then 15 Advanced Communications manuals to choose from, covering areas from humorous speaking to Speeches by Management.

One thing that you'll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.
