PSST Mentorship Program

 

 

Mentor:  A role model that offers support to a new or existing toastmaster.

 

Goals of the Program:  To build strong relationships between toastmasters allowing new or existing members of PSST to become better speakers, make long lasting friendships and develop leaderships skills while providing an outlet for toastmasters to voice personal opinions, concerns or issues.

 

Program Details: Each toastmaster will choose a member for the new academic year.  The mentor serves as an ally to the toastmaster who will exhibit the qualities listed below. There will be a maximum of two mentees per mentor.  The mentor is asked to meet with their mentee at least every 4 weeks during the first 6 months and every 2 weeks till the mentee completed the first 3 speeches.

 

Qualities of a Good Mentor:

 

  1. Listens patiently
  2. Inspires trust
  3. Learns continuously
  4. Gives advice without dictating actions
  5. Encourages independence yet offers support
  6. Offers constructive criticism as well as communicates hope and optimism
  7. Is open and honest
  8. Wants to spend time, reach out, and share
  9. Acts as an effective intermediary

 

Why be a Good Mentor:

 

  1. Satisfaction in knowing that you have an impact on a mentee’s professional and personal development
  2. Develop leadership skills and build confidence
  3. Share struggles and frustration that you overcame
  4. A link with “the younger generation”

 

Benefits for Mentees:

 

  1. Have an ally to help you through many hurdles
  2. Benefit from another person’s experiences

  4. Practice for being a good mentor
