Reaching the Mark with Contemplation

Our Sergeant of Arms, Judy, got us underway a little after 7:00 pm. Charles brought us up to date with some messages from the executive committee meeting which was wrapped up at 7:00 pm.

Our Word for the day was provided by Carole – Contemplation: think about something seriously and at length, especially in order to understand it more fully.

We began to exercise our voices and minds with a round robin- What makes your perfect day? Responses varied from starting with a good night sleep the night before to enjoying time with family and friends, to just being able to enjoy the day.

Ken provided us with an inspirational speech about people he had met who inspired him to share more with others. For him, inspiration was gained in meeting pilots when he was a young boy. These pilots inspired him to pursue a career in aviation.

Our first speaker for the night was Carole who gave a speech titled “Praise the Warrior” from the Visionary Communication Path, Level 3 Elective, Deliver Social Speeches. This was a skilful display of using rate and rhythm and volume to convey a message and emotion. Carole used contemplation to invite others to consider how to praise others. Her warrior was her brother. She told of his battle and celebration in fighting cancer and the family’s way of celebrating his life.  A very gentle yet moving story.

The second speaker was Tony who told us about the battle of Marathon in ancient Greece. It was the story of how the Athenians defeated the Persians. Cleverly Tony asked what the world would look like if the Persians had won. He also invited us to contemplate what if the world never saw or heard of the like of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle? This was again a skilful display with Tony showing the energy and enthusiasm required to win a battle. He sparked interest from members of the audience – he answered their questions enthusiastically.

After the break, Carole gave a toast to the dedication and kindness of the Palliative care nurses.

Lilli was our Table Topic Master:

  1. Our visitor, Fiona, was challenged to respond to What were her family traditions? She contemplated Going on holiday and told us how her mum set a tradition of forgetting something.
  2. Tony responded to What would you rather find, true love or $10 million?  Tony weighed up the pros and cons of both and gave us his authentic response of a personal nature.
  3. Ken was asked to tell us about where his next holiday would be. Kens contemplative response was to go where he could be with interesting people.  His philosophical approach to this question was inspiring.
  4. Carole’s response to her question, “what has been her greatest adventure” was thoughtful and reflective – she believes it is yet to come. This question provided an opportunity to look forward to her writing her memoir.
  5. Charles’ was asked to describe his favourite food. We all thought it was lamb, but he tried to convince us to eat more pork.
  6. Judy told us about her plans for next Christmas in response to her question about what she will do at the festive season. Her response was a personal affirmation of her plans.

Evaluators for the night were Charles on Carole’s speech, Carole on Tony’s and Ken for Table Topics. Each were able to bring out the points worthy of praise and some suggestions for improvement.

Fiona did an excellent recap of the meeting with targeted questions to test our listening skills.

We closed out the meeting with reports from the Timer and Grammarian and General Evaluator. Presentation of awards went to Best Speech: Tony, Best Table Topics Fiona and Charles, Best Evaluator Carole.

NOTE: We are delighted to announce that Fiona will become a member of the Wangaratta TM club.

Easy-Speak is open for the next meeting on Monday 8 October.

REMINDER:  the club is holding Humorous and International speech contests on 22 October.
