My interview with fellow Toastmaster Erika Lang

Author : Kareen Daley Harper

How would your friends describe you?

Erika's friends would describe her as being a thrill-seeker.  This is because she likes to do extreme things like I-flying.  Erika explains I-flying as being similar to sky diving but indoors.  "It's done through a wind tunnel and a really cool experience".  Erika's friends would also describe her as being very serious and smart.  She is the "go to girl" for information and advice.

How do you spend your free time?

During the summer months Erika likes to go motorcycling with her husband.  They've travelled to places like Montreal for the comedy festival and as far as South Carolina on her motorcycle.  The only downside would be the elements especially severe thunderstorms.  She's also had to contend with bugs, and luckily she has a windshield on her motorcycle and wears fingerless gloves to protect her from all the bugs zooming by.  During the winter months she uses this time as her "down time" and makes jewellery. This is her time of quiet solitude and she enjoys it because of the beautiful creations she will make. She made a gorgeous ring for her friend whose wedding she will attend in Hawaii in the Fall.

What three things would you keep?

Erika would not give up her motorcycle...no brainer there!

Her wedding band is also a precious keepsake that symbolizes her union of love and devotion she shares with her husband.

Her watch is another cherished gift from her husband that she would keep.  During a cruise trip with her husband they visited St. Thomas and it was there that he bought her a beautiful watch and surprised her with it.

What was your defining moment?

A defining moment for Erika came after she left high school to become a hair dresser.  She went into the salon one day and looked around and said to herself "Is this all there is to life?" "I'm better than this and I can do more than this".  At that moment she decided to make a change.  She went back to school to pursue a career as a flight attendant.  While on this journey, she met the President of Magna and a divisional President.  She travelled on their corporate jet as the attendant and saw the lifestyle and liked it very much.  She thought it was "pretty cool".  As a result of her professionalism and how well she handled everything on the Corporate jet she was offered a job.  From there she began her career as a receptionist and continued her studies which ultimately led her to a successful future career with The Globe & Mail.

What a great experience to be an interviewer and to have such a willing, easy-going, and fun participant.  Given this is my first interview, Erika certainly helped to make the process relaxing and enjoyable.  Of course it helps that she is a friend and fellow toastmaster, and I am pleased with how at ease she was with answering all of my questions.  I've learned a lot more about her and her journey in life thus far.  She is a thrill seeker, she's smart, she is loving and she is creative.  All of this has reinforced my view that we are all unique individuals with something special and brilliant to share with the world. And we all have it within us to make changes to improve our lives and be more fulfilled.

I truly have greater respect for Erika and thank her for sharing!
