What should I speak about?

Most seasoned Toastmasters will tell you that you should speak about what you know.  But perhaps you wonder, like I did recently, do I have enough to talk about to speak 10 times for 6 minutes each and keep people interested?  or, can I come up with enough content to fill at least 5 minutes of time?

Here are some ideas:

  • Toastmasters Magazine has lots of ideas.  For example this month's cover story is about how technology haa changed public speaking.
  • Wikipedia is as great a resourxe for little known facts as it is a source for speech content
  • Perhaps it's time to find the meaning of your favorite song.  Often there is a back story behind the lyrics.  James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" has a fascinating story behind it
  • Kids are a great source of creative ideas.
  • Former Securely Speaking Toastmaster (and my former mentor) Sajjad Lateef once gave a Table Topics speech inspired by a dream of visiting a world far away.  Write down your dreams when you wake.  Last night I had a dream about a city which had only one land line phone, and was just beginning to learn of cell phones.  There's nothing wrong with fiction as a speech topic.

The important part is how you speak, not so much the educational value of the topic, and you don't need to be an authority on the subject.

So go on, speak up!
