About Our Club

Welcome to Sage Beaverton Toastmasters Club!

We are a local chapter of Toastmasters International.  We strive toward becoming better communicators!

Toastmasters members from all walks of life and all corners of the globe all have their reasons to join. Come visit our club and learn why we joined Toastmasters and how it has contributed to our success.

Every Toastmaster has a Story to Tell

Toastmasters educational and leadership programs have benefited many members.  Below are the answers from 3 members to the question:
How have these skills benefited your personal and professional life?

A: There isn’t one position I’ve held at work that hasn’t required the ability to persuade, compromise and evaluate, or to display good presentation, project management, leadership and interpersonal skills. These are some core competencies at my company. As a result, I’ve been privileged to enjoy a successful career with Mattel. Personally, Toastmasters has come in handy for wedding toasts, church and family event planning, etc. Recently, it was immeasurably helpful when I had to deliver my grandfather’s eulogy. It was the easiest speech to write, but the hardest to deliver. Toastmasters prepares you for the moments you don’t always think about.

A: I've learned how to work with diversity, and ultimately bring out the best in everyone. Toastmasters also helped me keep my meetings on time and on agenda, and I've been able to pass these skills along to others on my team.

A: My job requires me to lead people who don't directly report to me, and Toastmasters helped me motivate them. The presentation skills I learned also helped me create and present status reports to senior management.

Visitors are always welcome!
Meet Toastmasters, just like you, from all walks of life.
No appointment necessary, just come join us! There are no membership restrictions, other than an age requirement of at least 18. We meet at Columbia headquarters and we wait in the lobby until about 11:55. When you come to Toastmasters you need to have a temporary badge which the security folks will issue to you. You do need to check in with them and get the badge. Just mention you are there for Toastmasters.

Got a question? Ask it here.

Does the mere thought of standing up to say a few words fill you with fear?

If so, you’re not alone! Fear of public speaking is reputed to rank even higher than death! Whether it’s the upcoming wedding speech, an important pitch to a client, or simply making your point in a meeting of colleagues, it’s easy for the fear to take over – so that you don’t perform at your best. There are consequences for how you’re viewed by friends, family and your boss, with follow-on emotional and economic impacts.

So what would you like to do about it?

If you’re employed in a reasonable sized organisation, you might have already attended a presentation skills course. Whilst good, you might have found that the learning wore off quickly and you’re still not that much further forward. If you really want to tackle your fear, and also if you’ve not got access to in-house training, Toastmasters is the perfect answer.

Our wide network of clubs and their learn-by-doing programme are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader because you’ll be building your skills at a pace that you choose. And the regular meetings (typically twice per month) ensure you practice and develop your skills – just as you might build your muscles through regular exercise (well some of you might!).

Here are just some of the benefits of joining Toastmasters:

  • Regular and constructive feedback from other learners as you practice organising your thoughts and presenting them clearly
  • Access to a wealth of educational materials and resources on public speaking, listening skills and effective communication in conferences and meetings.
  • A free subscription to the Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that provides insights on communication, leadership, club activities and other relevant topics.

Members quickly gain the skills that allow them to excel at job interviews, present humorous, informative or special occasion speeches or give powerful business presentations.

Come along to our next meeting to find out more and see it in action. Guests are most welcome and can come as many times as they like.

The Toastmasters Mission

How Does it Work?

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced programme allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

  • A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.
  • We learn through the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

    • The opportunity to build  up to 300 unique competencies
    • 10 specialized learning paths to choose from
    • Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
    • Real-world, transferable skills

One thing that you'll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.

The Toastmasters program is completely self-paced. You may speak as frequently or infrequently as you wish. You are not required to attend every meeting and you do not have to speak at each meeting. There are many meeting roles that require no advance preparation. The more active your participation, however, the more your speaking and leadership skills will benefit.

What are manual speeches?
Manual speeches are speeches prepared to meet certain criteria so that you may improve in several categories of speech writing and presentation. The Competent Communicator Manual is the first manual every Toastmaster works with, with ten projects.
Click here to see the "Ice Breaker" speech (the first speech every new member gives to the club).

What are some of the other manuals I can work with?
The Competent Leader Manual can be worked on at any time.  This manual gives you credit for roles you fill in the club meetings (timer, evaluator, grammarian, and a few others). Once you have completed the ten projects in this manual, you will be awarded the Competent Leader Award.

In addition, there are fifteen more manuals of five speeches each to choose from after you have completed the Competent Communicator Manual.
