Welcome to Statehouse Toastmasters!

Our club aims to provide a friendly and helpful environment where members can improve their communication and leadership skills. From beginner to veteran speakers, Statehouse Toastmasters members are as diverse as our speech topics. We conveniently meet during the noon hour on Thursdays, so feel free to bring your lunch.

This homepage is designed to offer current club news and events for members and guests alike, but feel free to contact us directly with any questions you may have. Thank you and we hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,

Kellie Romlein- President, Statehouse Toastmasters

Toastmasters Mission

The Toastmasters Mission
A statement of shared values

Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater selfconfidence and personal growth.

Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.

What to Expect

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced program allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment. Here are a few more details specific to our club:

  • Statehouse Toastmasters has over 20 members and meets weekly for one hour. Guests are always welcome, and are free to just observe or participate!
  • Members learn communication skills by working through manuals such as the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking. There are then 15 Advanced Communications manuals to choose from, covering areas from Humorous Speaking to Speeches by Management.
  • At Statehouse, we have one to three speeches per week, which are assigned to members in advance. Each new member is assigned a mentor, who assists with an individual's speaking and leadership goals.
  • There is no single "instructor" in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.

One thing that you'll love at Toastmaster meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.
