Welcome to Townsville University Toastmasters

We are a diverse group of people who work to improve our public speaking and leadership skills, increase our self-confidence, and boost our self-esteem.  Our club is open to everyone – students at JCU, staff members, and members of the community.

We meet on 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesdays on the James Cook University campus – Building 4 (Arts and Social Sciences Bldg.) in Room 132 on the first floor.  Meetings start promptly at 6:00pm and run until 8:00pm.  Guests are very welcome!  The best way to see what Toastmasters is all about – and how it can benefit you – is to attend a meeting.  Come early, meet our members, and ask as many questions as you like.

easy-Speak system updates

Many of you will have experienced a much faster system response in easy-Speak over the last two weeks.

Firstly, huge thanks to John Novak from California who has done so much server and database tuning.
Also, thanks to Kit Barritt, currently in the UK, for database conversion and Nahid Akbar in Canberra who were online with John and me for the update itself.
No small commitment given the different timezones that we cover.

The software update today is the next step in improving performance.

Mostly it is around a re-write of the view_meeting screen,...

Update to the mobile-aware agenda in easy-Speak

Booking your attendance or taking a role at your club's meeting is now available in a mobile aware format within easy-Speak.

The mobile aware meeting agenda screen now allows you to:

  • Book your attendance at the meeting,
  • Confirm or decline a role that has been assigned to you
  • Volunteer for an available role (if your club permits this)
  • Touching the meeting location opens a map and your GPS enabled mobile device will give you the travel directions if you need them.
  • Touching a fellow member's name on the screen opens...

easy-Speak in a language other than English

We expect to offer easy-Speak in several languages other then English during 2014.

Italian will be first and has been used as a test of the translation tools.
There has also been a good proportion of the translation work completed for German, Polish and French.
Spanish, Dutch, Swedish and Lithuanian are also on the possibles list.
We are considering the possibilities for multi-byte character sets such as Chinese, Japanese.

Many thanks to Kit Barritt in Qatar and Francesco Fidele in Italy for giving their time so generously to this project.

Club News

Toastmasters is about its members. The first few meetings can be daunting, but after a few weeks, you\''ll feel right at home! After an application is received, a vote is held on whether to accept the new members (even though we\''re always happy to have new members!) and then there is an exchange of pledges. The club pledges to support the inductees, and the inductees pledge to be supportivev and contribute to the club. Member inductions were held at our last meeting, and we officially welcomed three new members into the club

Once inductions are complete, you become a fully-fledged Toastmaster, with the same rights and duties as any other member. The first task ahead is to present your first speech, your Icebreaker, to the club. Used as a way to properly introduce yourself to everyone, it also gives you a chance to see where your strengths are with public speaking, and what areas need work. Icebreakers were presented last night with gusto
