Does the mere thought of standing up to say a few words fill you with fear?

If so, you’re not alone! Fear of public speaking is reputed to rank even higher than death! Whether it’s the upcoming wedding speech, an important pitch to a client, or simply making your point in a meeting of colleagues, it’s easy for the fear to take over – so that you don’t perform at your best. There are consequences for how you’re viewed by friends, family and your boss, with follow-on emotional and economic impacts.

So what would you like to do about it?

If you’re employed in a reasonable sized organisation, you might have already attended a presentation skills course. Whilst good, you might have found that the learning wore off quickly and you’re still not that much further forward. If you really want to tackle your fear, and also if you’ve not got access to in-house training, Toastmasters is the perfect answer.

Our wide network of clubs and their learn-by-doing programme are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader because you’ll be building your skills at a pace that you choose. And the regular meetings (typically twice per month) ensure you practice and develop your skills – just as you might build your muscles through regular exercise (well some of you might!).

Here are just some of the benefits of joining Toastmasters:

  • Regular and constructive feedback from other learners as you practice organising your thoughts and presenting them clearly
  • Access to a wealth of educational materials and resources on public speaking, listening skills and effective communication in conferences and meetings.
  • A free subscription to the Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that provides insights on communication, leadership, club activities and other relevant topics.

Members quickly gain the skills that allow them to excel at job interviews, present humorous, informative or special occasion speeches or give powerful business presentations.

Come along to our next meeting to find out more and see it in action. Guests are most welcome and can come as many times as they like.

Our Recent Meetings

September 1 – First Night Back

What a turnout for our first night back! It looks like we are all ready to start this year off with a bang. This year, we really look forward to goals being achieved, and challenges being over come. Remember: How you show up here, is how you show up everywhere.

September 8 – Community

Communities are formed not just by cities, but by groups like us supporting one another. There were a lot of great evaluations and we were introduced to Tracy who in her first year as a toastmaster has taken on an officer role! Where did it all start? A meme… (and not a troll meme either.)

September 10 – One Stop

Holy cow did that go well! A lot of people were really interested in joining us and it wasn’t just because there was candy on the table. Thank you so much to Tracy and her volunteers for setting up a great table and really getting out names out there.

September 15 – Motivation

I love it when we all end up on the same topic. Sure that’s why we have  theme, but seriously everyone was trying to inspire the rest of the club. It was so uplifting I almost ran a marathon… then changed my mind and went to bed. I am fired up though, and hope everyone else is too. Speaking of which, what do you want to achieve this year?

September 22 – Speech Contest

A moment of silence for anyone who missed this contest. As usual, the Humorous Speech Contest was a total riot and the Table Topics Contest really gave us some food for thought. Ed swung in on a vine and took home first place in both contests and Jane (on her first speech ever) took silver in the Humorous  Speech Contest. Congratulations to both our winners!

September 29 – Bulls eye

So much to cover, so little meeting. Not only did we get  lesson from Tara on how to use Easy Speak, we also got our latest club ribbon and watched our executive team get their training certificates.

From your Executive

Your current executive (Shahayar wasn’t at this meeting)! Sadly, we are looking for someone to take over as VP Education because Kim is moving away at the end of the month. If you feel you may be up for the job please let us know!

Team Time

A few of us went to visit the Dawson Creek on Monday, September 12 and it was a lot of fun. Going to other clubs is a great way to get to know other toastmasters and to get speeches done faster. They also happen to be a fun and inviting group. If you ever want to visit, they meet on Mondays from 6:45-8:30pm in the Aboriginal room of the Dawson Creek College.

Toast Masters International

When was the last time you truly experienced gratefulness? You don’t have to tell me, I just want you to think about it. Out of all the thinks humans can feel, gratefulness, is about the best one there is. You feel it because you found something nice in the world, something to be glad about. Many times, that leads you to share it with people, whether by a simple thank you, or just sharing the story. When you keep an attitude of gratefulness, you feel better and you make other people feel better. So on any level, big or small, what are you grateful for?

As for Me

I like Autumn a lot. The colours of the leaves, fancy coffees, and an excuse to bundle up and not pretend you know how to be fashionable. I also love Halloween, which is coming up fast. The October 27th meeting is our closest meeting to it and I heard there will be a costume contest, so have fun and dress up! I know I will.ce October 27th to be fashionable.

Knowledge. Action. Integrity.
