Does the mere thought of standing up to say a few words fill you with fear?

If so, you’re not alone! Fear of public speaking is reputed to rank even higher than death! Whether it’s the upcoming wedding speech, an important pitch to a client, or simply making your point in a meeting of colleagues, it’s easy for the fear to take over – so that you don’t perform at your best. There are consequences for how you’re viewed by friends, family and your boss, with follow-on emotional and economic impacts.

So what would you like to do about it?

If you’re employed in a reasonable sized organisation, you might have already attended a presentation skills course. Whilst good, you might have found that the learning wore off quickly and you’re still not that much further forward. If you really want to tackle your fear, and also if you’ve not got access to in-house training, Toastmasters is the perfect answer.

Our wide network of clubs and their learn-by-doing programme are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader because you’ll be building your skills at a pace that you choose. And the regular meetings (typically twice per month) ensure you practice and develop your skills – just as you might build your muscles through regular exercise (well some of you might!).

Here are just some of the benefits of joining Toastmasters:

  • Regular and constructive feedback from other learners as you practice organising your thoughts and presenting them clearly
  • Access to a wealth of educational materials and resources on public speaking, listening skills and effective communication in conferences and meetings.
  • A free subscription to the Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that provides insights on communication, leadership, club activities and other relevant topics.

Members quickly gain the skills that allow them to excel at job interviews, present humorous, informative or special occasion speeches or give powerful business presentations.

Come along to our next meeting to find out more and see it in action. Guests are most welcome and can come as many times as they like.

Best Table Topics Contest & Upcoming Events

The first interclub event with Mile 0 Communicators this year was a huge success!  Our contest chair Britta Studer created a great question challenging contestants to speak on their life purpose.  Our winners were 1st place Tara Forest , 2nd place Christian Pearson, and 3rd place Thomas Bosma.  All participants did a great job!  It is always amazing to me how everyone has a unique and inspiring answer to the same question.  Thanks to everyone who took on the contest roles that made it a smooth running event!

Coming up very soon will be the Santa Claus Parade on Saturday December 1, 2018. at 5 PM.  Our VPPR John Alexander will be keeping us updated on the planning.  If you can join us on the Parade route it is always a lot of fun!  This year we have candy to hand out.  We will also be decorating Lori's van and walking with the Club Parade Banner.   Bring your kids, your significant other - everyone is welcome to walk with us!

Our Christmas Party/Meeting will be on Thursday December 20, 2018.  If you have any party ideas or would like to Organize this Special Event contact Joyce - we are looking for fun ways to celebrate the season!

Our first interclub event of the new year will be the International Speech and Evaluation Contest on January 31, 2019.  Contest Chair will be Lori Slater.  Chief Judge will be Joyce Hadland-Wesenberg.  If you are planning to compete be aware that you must have completed 6 speeches in the Competent Communicator (old education program) or 2 Levels of a Path to qualify.  We will be holding this contest in Dawson Creek.  If you would like to volunteer for a role as judge, counter, timer, SAA, etc.  please contact Lori or myself.  The 2 clubs will holding the contest together but each club will complete seperately.  Winners will advance to the Area 42 Contest in February.

Here is the link for the District 96 Conference, Mar 29-31,2019 at the Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, North Vancouver, BC     https://d96toastmasters.ca/blog/district/district-96- conference-2019.    There are opportunities to volunteer at the conference.  It is an absolutely amazing experience and I definitely recommend attending if possible.  As Kim and Christian said the speakers are all excellent and there is much to learn from them.

I am very excited to see so many guests coming and to hear how welcome they feel at the meetings!  I want to thank every member and especially the executive team who are keeping the club experience fun and delivering well prepared speeches that are informative and entertaining!

Your Presdient,

Joyce
