Does the mere thought of standing up to say a few words fill you with fear?

If so, you’re not alone! Fear of public speaking is reputed to rank even higher than death! Whether it’s the upcoming wedding speech, an important pitch to a client, or simply making your point in a meeting of colleagues, it’s easy for the fear to take over – so that you don’t perform at your best. There are consequences for how you’re viewed by friends, family and your boss, with follow-on emotional and economic impacts.

So what would you like to do about it?

If you’re employed in a reasonable sized organisation, you might have already attended a presentation skills course. Whilst good, you might have found that the learning wore off quickly and you’re still not that much further forward. If you really want to tackle your fear, and also if you’ve not got access to in-house training, Toastmasters is the perfect answer.

Our wide network of clubs and their learn-by-doing programme are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader because you’ll be building your skills at a pace that you choose. And the regular meetings (typically twice per month) ensure you practice and develop your skills – just as you might build your muscles through regular exercise (well some of you might!).

Here are just some of the benefits of joining Toastmasters:

  • Regular and constructive feedback from other learners as you practice organising your thoughts and presenting them clearly
  • Access to a wealth of educational materials and resources on public speaking, listening skills and effective communication in conferences and meetings.
  • A free subscription to the Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that provides insights on communication, leadership, club activities and other relevant topics.

Members quickly gain the skills that allow them to excel at job interviews, present humorous, informative or special occasion speeches or give powerful business presentations.

Come along to our next meeting to find out more and see it in action. Guests are most welcome and can come as many times as they like.

The Christmas easy-Speak software release

The Christmas 2011 release contains no major new features, but it does contain many usability enhancements and several minor features that have been requested by users.

Membership Enhancements

  • Guests and Visitors more easily managed. We've revamped the way that guests, visitors and new members can be added to meetings and also to the club, with the addition of a Wizard which will automatically check for possible duplicates. We've also added a visitor management feature to the User List to enable easier management of the status of non-members in the club. Emails can now be sent to multiple recipients.
The VPM can easily follow up with visitors and guests, and conveniently change their status. This will reduce those long, out-of-date attendance lists on the Meeting pages, where some clubs currently have visitors who came once three years ago!
  • Easy link to Mike Raffety's DCP information for each Club|Area|Division
  • Member Survey printability and Summary improvements. We've improved the Member Interest summary statistics to provide an overview of the entire survey, with drill-down to particular questions. Weve also made the survey printable.

My Participation Enhancements

  1. Leadership Goals can now be set and tracked. The spring release contained the popular provision to set Communicator goals. In this release we have extended this to Leadership goals (such as completing an award or several projects). Goals have been included on the Member Survey
  2. Speech Requests - easier to manage. Speeches that you have requested will appear on the Sign Up page, listed under the meetings that you prefer to speak at, and an email notification will be sent to the Officers that schedule speeches in your club when you make a new request or change the preferred dates of a previously requested speech. (club option)
  3. Leadership and Manuals can be repeated. It is now possible to repeat speech manuals and leadership awards, and to make it easier than ever to submit a Leadership award, completed Leadership awards are shown collapsed to the Project level, with the completion date displayed in American (m/d/yyyy) format for ease of entering into the TMI website

Meeting Enhancements

  1. Word of the Day for Meetings. The Grammarian can now record the Word of the Day for each meeting either a word from the easy-Speak library, or their own word. The word will be printed on the agenda, and may be hidden until the meeting if that is the club practice. Words from the easy-Speak library are available as a printable page (the Grammarian Print).
  2. Members declining roles are prompted for comments. When a member declines a meeting role that they have been offered, they are invited to write a comment as to why they are declining. This comment is sent with the cancellation email, and displayed on the Meeting page. This should reduce the amount of follow-up that the meeting organisers need do with their members.
  3. Printable Speech Introductions. Earlier in 2011 we added the ability to enter a introduction to speeches. Weve now included the ability for the Toastmaster or Officers to print the introductions on a page.
  4. Expandable Sections speed improvements. On the Meeting page and Schedule Speeches page the collapsible sections have been converted to client-side controls, making them easier to use. The Attendance list on the Meeting page has been made collapsible to assist clubs with large visitor and guest populations.
