Issue 251, 4 September 2014
“Is the spring coming?" he said. "What is it like?"...
"It is the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine...”
Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
Dear Reader,
On behalf of District 74 and all the Toastmaster members, we would like to wish all our club secretaries a happy secretaries day for yesterday.
From me, to all those secretaries out there in the business sector, a very happy secretaries day to all of you.
On Moday of this week, I realised that, not only was it a new month, but also a new season. It then dawned on me that we are in the final quarter of 2014.Wow, where has this year gone? Nevertheless, it's downhill to Christmas from here, so let the celebrations begin.

1. FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S DESK
Have you taken the time to articulate what being a Toastmaster has meant to you? As I reflect on my personal journey, many benefits come to mind. I have found that my relationships with my teenage and young adult children have improved. I am able to actively listen to what they are telling me. I am also better able to analyse that and understand the issue at hand. I now have more skills to persuade them as a result of being a Toastmaster! All these skills are particularly useful when meeting with and working with clients.
What have been the benefits that you have experienced? One of our very successful clubs, 4 th Dimension, have a Member Moment at every meeting. This 2 minute slot gives members the opportunity to share their stories. This is a powerful marketing tool for guests coming to find out what Toastmasters is all about. It also motivates existing members. These success stories can be shared on your club website and newsletter. Try it at your club!
Soon we will be paying our semi-annual dues. When I reflect on the value I get from being a Toastmaster, I am happy to pay my dues. When your club members focus on the value to them personally of being a Toastmaster, they are bound to have the same reaction.
Till next time.
Kind Regards
Aletta Rochat, DTM | District Governor

3. SPEECHCRAFT COURSE FOR ADULTS
The Course was run, every Wednesday evening over 8 weeks in July/August ,by Algoa Toastmasters and Act Toastmasters Clubs working together.
The co ordinators of the Course were myself, Marlene Vosloo(van Wyk) and Megan Judd. Both Marlene and Megan are experienced Toastmasters, who have entered many District Competitions.
It was so rewarding to see the progress of the Speechcrafters and their absolute commitment to improving their communication skills.
Hope you will be able to feature this in OAP from the Toastmasters in the Eastern Cape.
Many thanks
Colleen

6. PAY YOUR FEES - 20/20 CLUB CHALLENGE
To all my fellow Toastmasters, please remember that all our semi anual fees are due at the end of this month.
To all the club treasurers, if you are paying your club fees over to TMI for the first time, try not to leave it for the last minute. Most people tend to go and pay the fees over the last day or 2 of the month, which leads to very high volumes of traffic and as we all know, busy traffic, leads to 'slow driving'.
20/20 CLUB CHALLENGE
Do you have ‘20/20’ Toastmaster vision? Do you know when the renewals deadline is? Are you still thinking about paying, but not actually got round to doing anything about it? Deadlines certainly create a clear vision of what’s got to be done by when…but sometimes it needs a helping hand. So here is ours…
Our 20/20 vision for this round of renewals is: Pay 20 renewals (which may include new joiners) by 20 September and be awarded a Treasurer Excellence Award for your club. And to throw down the gauntlet, the first 3 clubs to achieve this in each Division will be given a special certificate acknowledging their 1st, 2nd or 3rd placed club to do this. Tough challenge, eh? The best goals usually are. Good luck. You only have 2½ weeks left to do it!
