A Veteran Organization for the Modern Day Leader

By Emily Taylor

VP Education 2016-2017

Communication is everywhere, and strong communication skills can make all the difference in our personal and professional lives. Our ability to effectively represent ourselves in an interview, deliver hilarious and moving speeches at family gatherings and lead our project teams towards resounding successes fundamentally depends on our ability to come across to others in the way in which we intend. The good news is that despite the popular belief that one must be born with charisma and confidence to be a good speaker and leader, effective communication and inspiring leadership are learned skills, and Toastmasters provides the perfect framework to develop those skills and allow them to prosper in all aspects of our lives.

Toastmasters is a veteran organization that has been empowering individuals to become strong communicators and leaders since 1924. Today, more than 345,000 members participate in 15,900 clubs across 142 countries creating a global network of learners and leaders. The Toastmasters approach capitalizes on the power of experiential learning, creating an environment of active practice and careful reflection to drive continuous improvement. If we want to improve the way we come across to others, we have to ask others how we come across to them, and Toastmasters creates an encouraging and honest environment to do just that.

The Toastmasters Educational Program makes it impossible to not improve your leadership and communication abilities. New members to Toastmasters are provided with the Competent Leader (CL) and Competent Communicator (CC) manuals to begin the journey through the two tracks of the educational program (Figure 1). The manuals provide brief instruction and progressively challenging assignments that will cause you to think about different aspects of your communication and leadership style and experiment with styles that may not be as familiar to you. Following completion of your CL and CC manuals, several advanced manuals are available, allowing you to customize your Toastmasters experience to fit your personality and your goals.

Leadership is one of the most in-demand skills for the modern workplace, and with the increasingly common practices of job-hopping and entrepreneurship in business today, employers are becoming even more reliant on strong leaders capable of motivating, inspiring and retaining young and experienced employees alike. It is the leaders that prioritize continuous learning and improvement that will succeed in this new workplace. So whether you’re a seasoned leader or you’re just starting to discover your own leadership style, feel free to drop in on a Toastmasters meeting and discover how a veteran organization like Toastmasters can help you succeed in achieving your modern day leadership goals!
