HUMOR IN THE WORKPLACE - IS IT POSSIBLE? WHY NOT!!

Meeting:  Wednesday, January 2, 2013
In attendance:  Val, Chris, Helen, Geetha, Rueben, Rob, Claudette, Elena, Janet, Julie, and Kathy
Guest:  Mahdia

Word of the day:  New Year’s Resolutions

Our first meeting of 2013 was a huge success!  We had a full house, and a most welcome guest, Mahdia, returned for a visit.  Great to see you!

Val started off the meeting with the theme of New Year’s Resolutions.  While many of our members are choosing not to make resolutions, (I know that I never keep mine so I don’t make them anymore), some felt very strongly about theirs.

Rueben gave his third speech titled “Humanizing the Workplace with Humor”.  It was another enlightening speech giving insight to Rueben’s personality.  He talked about how the workplace is so different from personal life, but that it does not necessarily need to be that way.  Through humor he is is trying to transform his office into a happier place.  We spend so much time at work, we should enjoy it, at least a little.

Elena as our tabletopics master of the day kept all the topics relevant, and personalized to each individual, mostly based on today’s resolutions.  Excellent!  Rob had been quite adamant about his resolution of losing weight, until he heard Rueben’s speech, and was inspired.  In his tabletopic he outlined his new resolution of bringing humor into his serious workplace;  Chris talked about how convenience helps his get to the gym; Julie about the joys of traveling with kids - as long as you bring a babysitter!; Janet talked about traveling adventures on the farm; Val explained how giving is the best present; and Helen spoke about how important it is to spend time with your children.  Julie was the winner for tabletopics today, congrats!

With this idea of humor in the workplace goal resonating with all of us, we have decided to add a new section to our meeting called Jokemaster.  The Jokemaster each week will be required to bring a joke to the meeting.  It must be clean, and politically correct, naturally, and hopefully funny!  Rueben is taking up the first role and will be our Jokemaster next week - Jan 9.  Good luck Rueben!

Don’t forget to Register for the upcoming Club Officer Training/Toastmasters Learning Institute event this coming weekend - 12th January 2013  at the Shell Training Centre, 330 5th Ave SW, in tower 1, 11th floor.  $5 registration fee, $15 includes registration and lunch.  Registration begins at 9 am.  You do not have to be a Club Officer to attend.  Everyone is welcome!

The meeting being so well attended is hopefully an indication of the way the year will go.  With increased attendance Rueben has booked a larger room - 2 & 3 - to accommodate our club.  Here’s to a wonderful, goal achieving, 2013!
