WHAT IS A MENTOR?

Meeting:  Wednesday, January 23, 2013
In Attendence: Rueben, Elyanor, Rosario, Kathy, Geetha, Julie, Burton, Val, Chris, Elena, Claudette, Burton

Theme:  Mentoring
Word of the Day:  Schmaltz - exaggerated sentimentality

Elyanor gave us her Ice Breaker today, and we all got to know her a lot better.  Her speech entitled "My Journey" gave us a glimpse into what has led her to be with us today.  We all have struggles in our lives, and what we take from these challenges make us the people we become.  We can design our own lives, and choose to live a great life.  Well put Elyanor.  And thank you for sharing your story with us.

Rosario led us through what it means to be a mentor/mentee, the roles and responsibilities of each, the benefits, and how to build a program for our club.  A contract is set us between the mentor and mentee outlining the goals for the relationship and specific objectives each one has, and a time commitment is also agreed to.  It can be for 3 months, 6 months, 3 speeches, or whatever both parties agree to.  The mentor must have BELIEF in the mentee to Build the relationship, Evaluate, Listen, Interact, Encourage, and Follow up on goals.  The mentee must be willing to have SMART objectives - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Result oriented, and Time sensitive.  This will help the mentor provide feedback and suggestions that will help the mentee succeed in Toastmasters.

Thanks so much to Rosario for explaining the mentor program.  It is wonderful to have successful toastmasters provide insight into how they have achieved their goals and continue to grow.
