oppugn (verb) o-PYUNE

Attack, oppose, question the validity or truthfulness of.

For to let pass the infinite examples in sundry nations and several places of the world, and instance in our own, when as that old serpent could not prevail by those fiery flames and other his cruel tragedies, which he by his instruments put in ure everywhere in the days of Queen Mary and before, he then began another kind of war and went more closely to work; not only to oppugn but even to ruinate and destroy the kingdom of Christ by more secret and subtle means, by kindling the flames of contention and sowing the seeds of discord and bitter enmity amongst the professors and, seeming reformed, themselves.

William Bradford, Of Plimmoth Plantation: 1620-1647. Amazon

By an act of the state it is declared, that in all cases, for which the Legislature has made no positive provision, the laws of England shall furnish the rule of decision. If, therefore, any custom, usage, or practice, shall be in opposition to an express statute of Rhode Island; or where there is no statute on the subject, if it shall oppugn the principles of the common law of England, it is void, and ought to be disregarded. In the present instance, there is no express statute; but the discontinuance is fatal at common law; and, therefore, fatal by the law of Rhode Island.

U.S. Supreme Court, BROWN v. VAN BRAMM, 3 U.S. 344 (1797). United States Supreme Court

No one can seriously oppugn the importance of the Ten Commandments in the development of the law in our secular society.

Judge Batchelder (dissenting), UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SIXTH CIRCUIT, American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Foundation, Inc. v. Robert Ashbrook, File Name: 04a0224p.06, 14 July 2004. US Court of Appeals
