diplomatics (noun) dip-lo-MAT-iks

Palaeography, the science of deciphering ancient writings.

John Bradley, Illuminated Manuscripts. Amazon

Fr. Leonard was a distinguished scholar of late medieval spirituality, and an expert in paleography and diplomatics, disciplines concerned with the study of medieval manuscript books.

Carmela Vircillo Franklin, “Pro communi doctorum virorum comodo”: The Vatican Library and Its Service to Scholarship. American Philosophical Society

The one which I was reading - edited in 1824 by Mr. Thompson, librarian to Sir Thomas Raleigh - sins, it is true, by excess of brevity, and does not offer that character of exactitude which the archivists of my own generation were the first to introduce into works upon diplomatics and paleography.

Anatole France, The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard. Amazon

Unattributed review in The American Historical Review, Volume 109, No. 2, April 2004, American Historical Review of
Pierre Chaplais' English Diplomatic Practice in the Middle Ages. Amazon
