phat (adjective) FAT

Excellent, of a very high standard or quality (especially referring to music), sexy (referring to women).

"Yeah, I would be extremely turned on by it," said one young woman, drooling at the idea of a "phat stereo" belting out drum and bass.

Elisabeth Mahoney, The Guardian, 1 July 2007. Guardian

The company name is hardly a byword for hipness ('Hey people, check out my phat Vivancos!') but these headphones are brilliant because they work remotely from signals - the set can be universally connected to your TV set, CD or MP3 player, as well as your home computer.

Oliver Irish, The Observer, 19 October 2003. Observer

James Cobb wrote in The New York Times that ''Eric Halpern, 21, a student at Rockland Community College, shouted, 'That is phat!' when he spotted the New Beetle [a reintroduced Volkswagen] at a filling station.'' Though some have postulated the origin of phat as an acronym for ''pretty hips and thighs'' or even more lascivious constructions, the word is more likely a deliberate misspelling of fat, which has for centuries had a slang meaning of ''rich,'' as in ''fat and happy.''

William Safire, The New York Times, 17 May 1998. New York Times

The Alternative Physical Education Tour, designed to demonstrate and teach BMX and skateboarding skills, will visit eight schools across the country. 'Phat' talent will be on hand to offer trick tips, and safety advisors include BMX freestyle king Zack Shaw and European champion skater Ali Cairns.
